New Buffalo City Beach

New Buffalo Mi Public Beach

New Buffalo’s city beach and lakefront park offers 800 feet of sandy beach frontage, a snack bar, showers and playground. Boaters will appreciate the eight boat launch ramps and trailer parking.

Water sport lovers can head over to the beach’s Third Coast Surf Shop, which offers kayak and paddleboard rentals and lessons for use in the adjacent Galien River and on Lake Michigan when the water is calm enough. The shop is open every day from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

As always, beachgoers must exercise caution with the sometimes rough Lake Michigan waters. To this end, the New Buffalo beach employs lifeguards to watch over swimmers from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and the park uses a warning flag system to alert swimmers to dangerous swimming conditions.

Pets, fires, glass containers and alcoholic beverages are not permitted on the beach. The park closes at 11 pm. There is a parking fee.

Amtrak Chicago Style

I love this video. I think the point is that Michigan’s college kids can take Amtrak to Chicago for fun mini-breaks?

But I think it’s useful to note that Amtrak serves Lake Michigan Towns from Holland, MI to Michigan City, IN on to Chicago, IL and up to Milwaukee, WI.

So if you’re craving a beach vacation but don’t feel like driving, relax with a good book for a few hours and let Amtrak take you there.

Downtown St. Joseph, Michigan

I’m writing today from the Chocolate Cafe in St Joseph. St. Joseph easily has one of the cutest downtown shopping districts of all the Lake Michigan Beach Towns.

There are several blocks of shops, places like Edgewater Gifts, Kilwins ice cream and fudge, The Natural Gem jewelry store, Elephant’s Breath Antiques, Forever Books and Fuzzy Butz Pet Bakery.

Favorite downtown restaurants include Silver Beach Pizza, Tim’s Too for Asian food, the Broad Street Cafe, Cassava Restaurant for Latin American Cuisine and Bistro on the Boulevard for fine dining. The Chocolate Cafe has tasty coffee and offers a variety of chocolates, cheesecakes and other baked goods, including chocolate fondue for two or four – yum.

St. Joseph’s main beach, Silver Beach, with its pretty white lighthouse is located at the edge of the downtown shopping district, making it easy to hit the beach in the morning, hop into town for lunch and then jump back in the waves.
